Few top-10 names have a shorter paper trail than Mia. It does not appear in the federal data at all until 1933, spent decades as a rarity, and only began its real climb after 1985. Three letters, two syllables, and instant legibility in Italian, Spanish, German, and English turned out to be a powerful combination once American taste swung toward short, vowel-forward girls' names.

The climb crested in 2015, and Mia has since settled into the top tier rather than fading: in 2025 it ranked 6th nationally, given to about 1 in 145 newborn girls. In American records Mia is a latecomer, first appearing in 1933, and actress Mia Farrow (born Maria) gave it national visibility in the 1960s. Its 21st-century surge tracked the broader fashion for short, vowel-rich international names, helped by the fact that mia reads warmly as "mine" in both Italian and Spanish.
