Enzo is still accelerating. The name reached its all-time American peak in 2025, ranking 72nd and going to about one boy in every 375, the latest chapter in a climb that began back in 1986. That makes it one of the few names in the top 100 with no downturn yet on record, and its path here was international: after nearly a century as a rarity carried by Italian-American families (it first shows up in U.S. data in 1915), Enzo became a phenomenon in 1990s France before American parents caught on.

Its strongest states: Hawaii, Nevada, and Rhode Island, sketch its coalition: heavily Latino and Filipino communities in the West and Pacific, and the old Italian-American strongholds of southern New England. Enzo travels well across languages, which is much of its modern appeal.

Enzo's origin is genuinely debated. In everyday Italian use it functions as a short form of names ending in -enzo, chiefly Vincenzo and Lorenzo. But an older, independent line is often proposed: Enzio (or Enzo), the thirteenth-century king of Sardinia and illegitimate son of Emperor Frederick II, whose name is generally taken as an Italian adaptation of the German Heinz, itself a pet form of Heinrich. Both accounts likely feed the modern name. In the United States it first appears in the data in 1915, carried by Italian immigrant families, then stayed rare for decades. Its climb began in 1986 and steepened after the 1990s, when Enzo became a smash hit in France, boosted by the character Enzo Molinari in Luc Besson's 1988 film The Big Blue, and the international fashion for Italianate boys' names took hold in America.
