Sia first appeared on the U.S. Social Security records in 1968, but for decades it remained a rare choice. Its trajectory shifted sharply upward beginning in 1987, and by 2025 the name reached its peak at rank 1107, with a frequency of about 1 in every 7476 newborn girls. The name saw its highest recorded usage in Washington, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. This modern rise is almost certainly tied to the international fame of Australian singer-songwriter Sia Furler, who broke into the mainstream in the 2010s. While Sia has Old Norse and Welsh roots, its contemporary use is largely a product of pop culture, making it a modern classic in the making.

Sia has multiple proposed origins. As a Scandinavian name, it is often a short form of Sigrid, from Old Norse 'sigr' (victory) and 'fríðr' (beautiful). It is also used as a Welsh diminutive of Sian, the Welsh form of Jane, ultimately from Hebrew Yochanan meaning 'God is gracious.' In modern usage, Sia has gained popularity as an independent name, influenced by the Australian singer Sia Furler.
