Ava was the great overnight success of the 2000s, except the night lasted eleven centuries. A name borne by a Frankish saint and by the first woman poet in German, it drifted at the edge of American data from 1880 until Ava Gardner lent it mid-century glamour, then detonated around the millennium as celebrity parents and the Emma-Ella sound wave converged on it. The peak came in 2007, and the name held in or near the national top five for most of two decades.

As of 2025 Ava ranks 11th, given to about 1 in every 208 newborn girls, easing downward since 2016 at the unhurried pace typical of names that became generational defaults. A girl named Ava today joins a large cohort, but the name's brevity and old-Hollywood polish have kept it from feeling dated even on the descent.

Popular modern glosses tying it to Eve (Hebrew Chawwah, "life") or to Latin avis, "bird," are later associations rather than derivations, and careful references flag the name's origin as unresolved. In the United States, Ava idled in the lower reaches of the data from 1880 onward, warmed up during Ava Gardner's mid-century stardom, then exploded at the turn of the millennium, a boom often traced in part to a wave of celebrity daughters named Ava beginning in the late 1990s.
