Jimi is a modern respelling of Jimmy that shot to fame in the late 1960s and early 1970s thanks to one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix. The Social Security data shows the name was first recorded in 1953, a decade before Hendrix's rise, but its peak year was undeniably 1971, the year after his death, as his legend continued to grow. Since then, its usage has been stable but very rare, never cracking the top 1000 and with no state concentration, reflecting its status as a distinctive, music-associated choice rather than a mainstream classic.

Jimi is a modern spelling variant of Jimmy, which is a diminutive of James, derived from the Hebrew name Jacob (Ya'aqov), meaning 'supplanter'. The spelling Jimi gained prominence in the mid-20th century, most notably through the iconic guitarist Jimi Hendrix (born 1942).
