Isaac has one of the longest unbroken records in American naming, present in every Social Security list since 1880, never once out of the top 1000. Its twentieth-century story is a slow fade followed by a patient rebuild: from the 1960s it climbed for five straight decades, cresting at last in 2013 before beginning the gentle descent that puts it at rank 47 in 2025, about one boy in 287.

Its current geography is striking for a patriarch's name: strongest in the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and Maryland, an urban, coastal footprint. That reflects Isaac's unusual reach, it is simultaneously a Jewish mainstay, a Protestant revival name, a Spanish-language favorite, and a scientist's name, and dense metropolitan areas hold all four constituencies at once.

The fade since 2013 has been unhurried, which is typical of names this established. Isaac behaves less like a trend than like Thomas or Samuel: it cycles between roughly rank 40 and rank 120 across generations without ever sounding dated, and the laughter in its etymology keeps a warmth that few names of comparable antiquity can claim.

In Genesis, Isaac (Hebrew Yitzchak) is the son born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age, and the name plays on the Hebrew verb "to laugh", both parents laugh at the promise of a child. It remained a core Jewish name through antiquity and the Middle Ages, and after the Reformation was adopted enthusiastically by English Protestants; Isaac Newton is the emblematic early-modern bearer. In the United States it has never left the Social Security top 1000 since records began in 1880, drifting downward through the early twentieth century and then rebuilding from the 1960s onward to a peak in 2013.
