Meaning & origin
Gabriel moves slowly because it has nowhere urgent to be. One of the few names with standing in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam alike, it has appeared in American data every year since 1880, climbed without hurry through the late twentieth century, and peaked in 2010. The years since have taken back remarkably little: as of 2025 it holds 37th place among American boys, given to about 1 in every 260, a fifteen-year "decline" gentler than most names' plateaus.
The archangel gives the name its spine, but its modern reach is equally literary and international, Gabriel García Márquez in Spanish, Gabriel Byrne in Irish English, standard forms in French, Portuguese, and Italian. Gabe, the all-American short form, lets the name shift registers effortlessly between formal and familiar.
Its strongest states are Hawaii, Alaska, and the District of Columbia, three of the most culturally plural places in the country, which is exactly where a name fluent in this many traditions should over-perform.
Gabriel renders Hebrew Gavri'el, generally parsed as gever, "strong man," plus El, "God", hence the common glosses "God is my strength" and "strong man of God." Its bearer needs little introduction: the archangel who interprets visions in the Book of Daniel, announces the births of John the Baptist and Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, and, as Jibril, transmits the Quran to Muhammad, making Gabriel one of a very small set of names honored across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. That triple standing carried it through medieval Europe and into every major Western language. In the United States the name has been present since records began in 1880, rising patiently through the late twentieth century to a 2010 peak, and it has remained a top-40 fixture ever since.
