Meaning & origin

Emma holds a distinction almost no other American name can claim: its statistical peak came in 1881, in the second year the federal government kept count, and it climbed all the way back to the top more than a century later. A staple of the Victorian nursery and of Austen's fiction, it spent the middle of the twentieth century in grandmother territory before parents rediscovered its clean two-syllable shape in the 1970s and drove it to No. 1 in 2008 and again through the mid-2010s.

The crest has passed, Emma has been drifting downward since 2013, but slowly. In 2025 it still ranked No. 3 nationally, given to roughly one of every 126 newborn girls, with its strongest showings in the District of Columbia, Alaska, and Wyoming: a rare name that polls equally well in the city and the mountain West. Its appeal is structural as much as stylistic, two letters repeated, two syllables, understood in every European language, which is why Emma tops charts in France, Germany, and Scandinavia in the same decades it tops them here.

Emma began in the early Middle Ages as a pet form of Germanic names built on the element ermen/irmin, "whole, universal." It reached England with Emma of Normandy, the eleventh-century queen consort of both Æthelred the Unready and Cnut the Great, and stayed in steady English use through the medieval period. Jane Austen's Emma (1815) fixed it in the literary canon, and the name rode a great Victorian wave on both sides of the Atlantic, in the American data its single best year is 1881, the second year of record-keeping. After a deep mid-twentieth-century fade it returned in force from the 1970s onward, ranking No. 1 in the United States in 2008 and again for a run of years in the mid-2010s.
