Meaning & origin

Eloise carries the memory of one of the Middle Ages' most famous minds, Héloïse, the scholar whose correspondence with Abelard has been read for nine centuries, filtered through the mischievous six-year-old of Kay Thompson's 1955 Plaza Hotel books. That double inheritance, learned and playful at once, is a fair description of how the name reads to American parents today.

The numbers show a name still gathering speed. Present in Social Security records since 1880, Eloise spent the middle of the twentieth century in near-total eclipse before turning upward in 1992; it has risen almost without interruption since, reaching No. 49 in 2025, its best showing on record, with roughly 1 in every 378 newborn girls given the name. Unlike many antique revivals, its peak is not behind it but happening now.

Geographically, Eloise skews hardest toward northern New England, Vermont and New Hampshire lead its state rankings, along with Alaska, regions that have also driven revivals like Mabel and Elsie. Parents drawn to it tend to like vintage names with a built-in modern nickname, and Eloise obliges with Ellie, Elle, and Lou.

Eloise descends from Old French Héloïse, carried most famously by Héloïse d'Argenteuil, the brilliant twelfth-century scholar whose letters to the philosopher Peter Abelard became one of the best-known correspondences of the Middle Ages. Its ultimate derivation is genuinely debated: most scholars point to a Germanic name such as Helewidis, from elements meaning "hale, healthy" and "wide," while the association with Greek hēlios ("sun") is generally regarded as later folk etymology. The spelling Eloise took hold in English use by the nineteenth century, and in American records the name appears from 1880 onward, enjoying modest early-twentieth-century use before nearly vanishing at mid-century. Kay Thompson's 1955 picture book about a six-year-old who lives at the Plaza Hotel kept the name in the cultural air until its steep climb beginning in the 1990s.
