Meaning & origin

Nine centuries separate Adeline's first English record, in the Domesday Book, from its best American year, which happens to be 2025. The name never left the Social Security data (it has appeared every year since 1880), but it spent the mid-twentieth century in deep obscurity before the vintage revival caught it. Rising steadily since 1985, it reached 59th place in 2025, going to about one in every 416 newborn girls, with the trend line still pointing up.

Adeline runs strongest in Vermont, Wyoming, and Alaska, an entirely small-state map that matches its homespun, 'Sweet Adeline' warmth. Its spelling cousins, Adalyn, Adelyn, Adaline, collectively add a large shadow population, so on any given playground the sound is more common than the rank implies. Parents drawn to Adeline tend to shortlist other polished antiques: Eleanor, Genevieve, and Violet for girls; Theodore and Everett for boys.

Adeline is a French pet form of Adela, built on the Germanic element adal, 'noble,' the same root that gives Adelaide and Alice. The Normans carried Adelina and Adeline to England, where the name appears as early as the Domesday Book (1086); it faded after the Middle Ages, was dusted off by the Victorians, and lodged itself in American memory through 'Sweet Adeline' (1903), the definitive barbershop-quartet standard. It has been in the Social Security data every year since 1880, endured a long mid-century lull, and has climbed continuously since 1985, 2025 was its best year on record.
