Rowan

Meaning & origin

Part saint's name, part tree name, Rowan manages to be Irish, botanical, and unisex all at once. It traces to Ruadhán, "little red one," the name of a sixth-century Irish abbot, while English speakers know the rowan as the mountain ash, a tree planted by doorways for centuries to ward off harm. The name reached American records only in 1916 and idled in obscurity for two generations before beginning, in 1986, the climb it is still on.

That climb has never crested: 2025 marks Rowan's all-time peak, at No. 59 nationally, with about one of every 328 newborns receiving it across both sexes. Its strongholds are Wyoming, Vermont, and New Hampshire, mountain and forest country, fittingly. Rowan draws parents who want a real name with real history that nonetheless escapes gender expectations, and it keeps company with Wren, Sage, and Finn in the granola-leaning corner of the charts. Bearers as different as Rowan Atkinson and Rowan Blanchard demonstrate its range.

Rowan has two intertwined sources. The primary one is Irish: Ruadhán, a diminutive of ruadh, "red," borne by the sixth-century St. Ruadhán of Lorrha, one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland, and anglicized through the surname Ó Ruadháin. The second is the English word for the rowan tree, the mountain ash, its name Scandinavian in origin, a tree hung with red berries and centuries of protective folklore. The name entered the American data in 1916 and stayed rare for decades, used mainly for boys. Since the mid-1980s it has climbed continuously, and its nature-name credentials and soft sound have made it one of the country's most genuinely unisex choices.
