After a period of decline, Tashi has been rising again since 2013, reflecting a recurring pattern of cyclical interest in spiritually evocative names. While its exact etymology is debated between Tibetan and Sanskrit origins, the name's association with good fortune gives it cross-cultural appeal. Tashi has two possible derivations. In Tibetan, it is a transliteration of 'bkra shis,' meaning 'auspicious' or 'good fortune,' and is commonly used as part of phrases like 'Tashi delek' (good luck). Alternatively, it may be a modern Western variant of the Sanskrit name 'Tasya,' meaning 'theirs' or 'belonging to that one.' The name gained recognition in the West through Tibetan Buddhism and figures such as the 14th Dalai Lama, whose full name includes Losang and Tenzin but not Tashi; however, many Tibetan names incorporate Tashi as a component.
