Tarique is the English transliteration of the Arabic name Tariq (طارق), derived from the root ṭ-r-q meaning 'to strike' or 'to knock.' In the Quran, al-Tariq (the Nightcomer) is the title of the 86th surah and refers to a bright star. The name gained prominence through Tariq ibn Ziyad, the Umayyad general who led the conquest of Visigothic Hispania in 711 CE and after whom Gibraltar (from Jabal Tariq, 'mountain of Tariq') is named.
