It saw a notable uptick in the 1990s, reaching its peak usage in 1999, mirroring the broader popularity of -i ending spellings and names like Cindy and Cyndi. Syndi is a variant spelling of Cindy, itself a diminutive of Cynthia (from Greek Kynthia, an epithet of the moon goddess Artemis, referring to Mount Kynthos on Delos) or occasionally of Lucinda (from Latin lux 'light'). The spelling with 'Sy' instead of 'Ci' emerged in mid-20th-century American English as a stylistic variant, likely influenced by names like Sydney.
