While Sophia was claiming the very top of the American charts in the 2000s, Sophie ran a quieter parallel campaign. The French form has been in the federal data since 1880, was a familiar presence in turn-of-the-century immigrant neighborhoods, and all but vanished by the 1960s, then rode the same wave of affection for wisdom's name back up from the mid-1980s onward, with its share of births peaking in 2011.

In 2025 Sophie ranked 55th, given to about 1 in 403 newborn girls, popular enough to feel familiar, rare enough that a classroom rarely holds two. Parents who love Sophia's meaning but not its ubiquity have treated Sophie as the knowing alternative, and the numbers suggest that strategy has held stable for over a decade.

Its strongest states make an odd trio, Wyoming, the District of Columbia, and South Dakota, which is to say Sophie has no real regional base; it performs at a steady simmer nearly everywhere.

Sophie is the French form of Sophia, from the Greek word sophia, "wisdom." The parent name was borne by early Christian saints, most famously the legendary martyr Sophia, mother of daughters named Faith, Hope, and Charity, and became a fixture of European royalty; Sophia of Hanover was heir to the British throne under the Act of Settlement of 1701, which helped normalize the name in the English-speaking world. The French spelling has been in American records since 1880 and was reasonably common around 1900, particularly in immigrant communities, before fading at mid-century. It returned in force alongside Sophia's boom in the 1990s and 2000s, prized as the slightly softer, more casual of the pair.
