Maverick may be the clearest case of Hollywood writing a name into the American record. It does not appear at all until 1957, the year James Garner's western Maverick hit television; it began its long modern climb in the mid-1980s, right as Top Gun made the word a call sign; and it peaked in 2023, on the heels of Top Gun: Maverick. Few names wear their cultural timeline so openly.

The geography fits the word. Maverick runs strongest in Alaska, Wyoming, and South Dakota, wide-open, rural states where the frontier connotation lands as a compliment rather than a dare. At 49th nationally in 2025, given to about one boy in 290, it sits alongside Wyatt, Colt, and Waylon in the cohort of rugged Americana names that have moved from novelty to mainstream in a single generation.

The consideration for parents is the word itself: naming a child "nonconformist" is a bet that the swagger stays charming. In its favor, the name has genuine history behind the flash, a real Texas rancher, a real etymology, and the friendly short form Mav softens it considerably.

Maverick is a word name with an unusually traceable pedigree. The word comes from Samuel A. Maverick (1803–1870), a Texas rancher and land baron who declined to brand his cattle; unbranded range calves came to be called mavericks, and by extension the word attached to any person who refuses to run with the herd. As a first name it enters the Social Security data in 1957, the year the television western Maverick, starring James Garner, premiered. It began a sustained climb in the mid-1980s, when Top Gun gave the name to Tom Cruise's pilot call sign, and the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick pushed it to new heights.
