Marceline spent over a century as a name Americans almost never used. Recorded as far back as 1891, it idled in obscurity until around 2005, when the taste for antique French names with long vowels began pulling it upward, and Adventure Time's beloved vampire queen, introduced in 2010, gave a rare name a face. Marceline sits at the end of a long Roman diminutive chain: Marcus gave rise to Marcellus ("little Marcus"), which produced Marcellinus, whose French feminine form is Marceline. Marcus itself is of uncertain derivation, traditionally associated with the war god Mars. The name has genuine French literary weight through the Romantic poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmore (1786-1859). In the United States it has been recorded since 1891 but stayed rare for more than a century; its recent rise, underway since 2005, coincides with the vintage French vogue of Adeline and Céline and got a distinct pop-culture assist from Marceline the Vampire Queen, a lead character on the animated series Adventure Time.
