Since that peak, its popularity has been on a steady decline, and since 1985 the trajectory has been consistently falling. It first appeared in U.S. birth records in 1929, and remains a relatively rare choice today. The name Dione has competing origins. In Greek mythology, Dione is a Titaness, sometimes considered a consort of Zeus and mother of Aphrodite. The name may derive from Greek Dios, the genitive of Zeus, meaning 'of Zeus'. Alternatively, it could be a feminine form of Dion, which itself derives from Dionysios (Dionysus). It was rarely used in English-speaking countries before the 20th century and saw modest use in the 1960s and 1970s.
