Colton is the surname name with a cowboy hidden inside: strip it to Colt and you have a revolver, a young horse, and a whole frontier aesthetic. That double register, respectable English place name on the birth certificate, ranch-hand nickname on the playground, powered its rise through the 1990s and 2000s alongside Wyatt, Gunnar, and Tucker.

The statistical arc is now clearly post-peak. After appearing in Social Security records as early as 1913 and spending decades in obscurity, Colton crested in 2013 and has been falling since. It remains a common choice, 103rd in 2025, given to about 1 in every 499 newborn boys, but the trend line points down, which some parents will read as a drawback and others as welcome breathing room.

The place name became a surname, and the surname trickled into American first-name use, appearing in Social Security records from 1913. It stayed rare until the 1980s, then rode two reinforcing trends, the surname-name boom and the cowboy cachet of the built-in nickname Colt, to a 2013 peak inside the top 60.
