John Cassian carried desert monasticism into the Latin West; sixteen centuries later, a Star Wars rebel spy named Cassian Andor carried the name into American hospitals. Cassian is the English form of the Latin Cassianus, a name formed from the old Roman family name Cassius. What Cassius itself meant is genuinely unsettled; a derivation from Latin cassus, "empty, vain", is often suggested but not proven. The name's historical weight comes from two early saints: John Cassian (c. 360–435), the monk whose writings transmitted Egyptian desert monasticism to the Latin West, and Cassian of Imola, a schoolmaster-martyr. Despite that pedigree, the name was essentially absent from American use, first recorded only in 1997, until the Star Wars character Cassian Andor (Rogue One, 2016, and the series Andor, 2022) introduced its soft, aristocratic sound to a mass audience.
