The name has genuine age, it shows up in Social Security records as far back as 1887, but for most of the twentieth century it read as a surname first, familiar from the 1980s sitcom of the same name.

The numbers tell a story of slow-burn adoption that recently caught fire. Benson has been rising since 1988, and 2025 marked its all-time peak at 279th place, with roughly 1 in every 1,407 newborn boys receiving the name. The recent acceleration is hard to separate from pop singer Benson Boone, whose 2024 breakout put the name in front of a generation of younger parents.

Geographically, Benson runs strongest across the northern tier, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Vermont lead the country, a distribution it shares with much of the current crop of buttoned-up surname names. As an American first name it appears in Social Security records as early as 1887 but stayed rare for a century, used mostly in families honoring a surname. It joined the broader surname-name wave in the late twentieth century and has climbed steadily since 1988, with a sharp recent lift that coincides with the fame of singer Benson Boone.
