Aurora is at the highest point in its recorded history and still climbing. The name ranked 15th among American girls in 2025, a peak reached that very year, and was given to about one in every 227 newborn girls, the payoff of an unbroken rise that began in 1985. Names four decades into a climb usually plateau; Aurora has not.

Its geography is almost poetic. The name runs strongest in Wyoming, Vermont, and Alaska, northern, star-dark states where the aurora borealis is an occasional fact of the sky rather than a metaphor. Few names align their meaning and their map so neatly.

Parents drawn to Aurora are usually weighing three inheritances at once: the Roman goddess of dawn, the Disney princess, and the northern lights. The princess association is the one skeptics cite, but the name's breadth is its defense, it belonged to classical mythology for two millennia before 1959, and the nickname Rory gives it a tomboyish escape hatch. The practical caution is simply popularity: a top-15 name, unlike the dawn, is no longer rare.

Aurora is the Latin word for dawn and the name of the Roman goddess who renewed herself each morning to announce the sun, the counterpart of the Greek Eos. European parents have used it as a given name since the Renaissance revival of classical names. Its modern associations layer neatly on the ancient one: the aurora borealis, named for the goddess; Princess Aurora of Sleeping Beauty, in Tchaikovsky's 1890 ballet and Disney's 1959 film; and the general twenty-first-century appetite for luminous, nature-and-myth names. In American data it has been present since 1880, dipped to obscurity midcentury, and began the climb in 1985 that has since carried it to unprecedented heights.
