Ailani is one of the youngest names in the American top 200, it did not exist in Social Security records at all before 1996. Since 1997 it has climbed nearly every year, and 2025 marked a new peak: 168th place, or roughly 1 in 889 newborn girls. That arc mirrors the whole lani family, the group of Hawaiian and Hawaiian-styled names (Leilani, Kailani, Alani, Milani) that has become one of the defining girl-name sounds of the 2020s.

Its geography is more interesting than a Hawaiian-styled name might suggest: New Mexico is its strongest state, ahead of Delaware and Hawaii itself. That pattern, pronounced strength in the Southwest, suggests the name's flowing vowels appeal well beyond families with Hawaiian ties, sitting comfortably alongside Spanish-language favorites.

On meaning, honesty is warranted.
