Short, antique, and quietly technical, Ada packs an unusual amount of history into three letters. Its American peak came in 1880, literally the first year the federal government kept count, and it then spent a century sliding into grandmother territory before turning around in 1997. The comeback is real but unhurried: as of 2025 the name ranks No. 219, given to about one in every 1,147 newborn girls, which leaves it recognizable without being common.

That scarcity is part of the appeal, and so is the résumé. Ada Lovelace, Byron's mathematician daughter, gives the name a claim no rival can match, patron saint of programming, honored in the name of a Defense Department language, and Nobel laureate Ada Yonath and poet Ada Limón keep the modern ledger full. A Victorian revival name that doubles as a STEM statement is a rare combination.

Its strongest states: North Dakota, Maine, and Montana, sketch a northern, rural pattern common to the vowel-led heirlooms now returning. For parents who love Nora and Hazel but find them suddenly everywhere, Ada offers the same era at a fraction of the frequency.

Ada has two independent sources that merged in English use. As a Germanic name it began as a short form of names built on adal, "noble", Adelaide, Adela, Adeline, and was borne by a 7th-century Frankish abbess. Separately, Adah appears in Genesis as one of the earliest women named in the Bible, her name usually explained as "adornment." The name entered fashionable English use in the 18th and 19th centuries; its most consequential bearer is Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron, whose notes on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine are widely regarded as the first computer program, and for whom the U.S. Department of Defense named the Ada programming language in 1980. In America the name's statistical peak came in 1880, the very first year of federal data, followed by a long fade and a revival that began in 1997.
